Waikouaiti ~ The Birthplace of Otago

Waikouaiti - pronounced Wai - kou - a-iti (end/crossing of little wading or swimming rivers/streams)

Waikouaiti is a picturesque coastal town along State Highway 1, South of Palmerston (10 minutes’ drive), and North of Dunedin (35 minutes).

The Waikouaiti and surrounding coastal communities are pioneering locations that have a rich and varied history

Services for visitors passing through include a general store, self-serve and pre-pay fuel stop, bakery (an absolutely mouth-watering bakery specialising in all the traditional kiwiana delicacies), a takeaway, pub, public toilet and café, all along the main street.

However, Waikouaiti is a town of many secrets not visible from the main road.

It is worth making time to stop and take in the many attractions, including our Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre.

For information on local attractions visit the North East Otago Discoveries website.
