About Us

The Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre is run entirely by volunteers.

The Waikouaiti District Museum Society was formed in 1966.

The Society is administered by a committee which meets monthly.

In 2011, the Society formally changed the name of the Museum (but not the Society, which remains the same) to the Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre.

Management

Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre is East Otago’s leading regional museum. In addition to a collection of 19,000 items, it hosts an information centre, offers a genealogy research service and sells document and photographic reproductions. Work is underway to restore the 1869 BNZ Bank building.
“The Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre is a warm & welcoming regional museum and heritage centre. We operate as both a popular visitor attraction where an eclectic collection of heritage items are on display; and as an information provider & preserver of local heritage items.”
